The National collection of alive cultures of Vibrio cholerae and other pathogenic vibrios
Pathogenic Vibrios Collection of Public Institution «Ukrainian Anti-Plague Station» of Ministry of Health of Ukraine (at that time Crimean Anti-plague Station) was founded by its employees as of 1974. Now the collection is functioning on the basis of reference-laboratory for diagnostics and identification of cholera agents and other pathogenic vibrios of the Ukrainian Anti-plague Station.
According to the Constitution of Cabinet of Ministries of Ukraine # 1241 as of 2004/09/24, the collection of Î1 and non Î1 cholera agent strains of the Ukrainian anti-plague station got the status of the National collection of pathogenic vibrios and was referred to scientific objects that present national property. Under Constitution mentioned above the Certificate of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine was received.
The National collection contains the Î1 and non Î1 cholera agent cultures allocated on Ukraine regions and strains received from the international collections. In the National collection, storage and maintenance of live functions of pathogenic vibrios and planned periodic genetic and bacteriological investigations of strains are performed. The Collection constantly is filled up with new Î1 and non Î1 cholera strains from all regions of Ukraine that are investigated in reference-laboratory for diagnostics and identification of cholera agents and other pathogenic vibrios of the Ukrainian Anti-Plague Station. The electronic informational database on biological properties of Î1 and non Î1 cholera strains that is permanently updated with results of ongoing research of various pathogenic vibrios features is created.
Collection strains are investigated continually. There are performed the experimental research works and its results are published in core journals. On the basis of the received data of investigations, Candidate's and Doctor`s theses was defended.
Activity of the National collection is regulated by following acts:
1. The Charter of the Ukrainian anti-plague station;
2. Regulations of bacteriological laboratory;
3. Regulations of the National collection of Public Institution "Ukrainian Anti-Plague Station» of Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
4. Sanctions of the Central Policy Commission to work with agent of second group of pathogenicity and for experimental work with cholera strains.
Since 2008, on the basis of the National collection of pathogenic vibrios of the Ukrainian Anti-Plague Station, there is functioned the depositary branch of Public Institution «Institute of Epidemiology and Infectious diseases named after L.V. Gromashevsky of Academy of Medical Science" where pathogenic vibrios and its phages are being deposited with privilege of certification.
During long time of pathogenic vibrios collection existence, stable genetic properties of vibrios were investigated and 6 cultures are defined as reference strains.
In 2009, following work is performed:
- 6 vibrio strains of different species with various properties are issued on deposition;
- 6 vibrio strains of different species are deposited;
- For 6 vibrio strains of different species «Certificates on primary deposition of microorganism strains» are received;
- For 6 vibrio strains of different species separate projects of methodical guidelines that should provide the reference strains usage in diagnostics of cholera agents and other pathogenic vibrios (verification of nutrient mediums, diagnostic specimens, etc.) are developed;
- For 6 vibrio deposited strains of different species, patent descriptions for patenting certification are prepared.
